Case Study for Human Factors and Ergonomics Society
Client Overview
The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) founded in 1957 is
an interdisciplinary nonprofit organization of professional people in the
human factors field. The Society promotes the discovery and exchange
of knowledge concerning the characteristics of human beings that are
applicable to the design of systems and devices of all kinds. It has 22
technical groups and numerous local and student chapters.
The Challenge
As a professional society that fosters good human factors through product design, HFES created Web Design task force in December 2002 to form guide lines to make their website more usable. Based on the task force recommendations, HFES wanted to redesign website to meet usability goals as well as provide improved online services for their members.
Tecra Solution
HFES posts news, publications and membership forms for their members on the website. The website was not well organized for easy retrieval of necessary information. The members had to fill out forms online or mail their requests to sign up, renew or make changes to their profile. The data was stored in IMIS database and updated by HFES central office staff for member information and accounts.
The challenge to meet the HFES website requirement was twofold.
Redesign the information architecture to layout content and maintain usability standards
Provide ability to members to signup, renew, make changes or order publications online
Tecra implemented MemberLogik™ product to meet HFES requirement to provide ability for HFES members to manage their account online to sign up, renew or change their information. MemberLogik™ implements necessary workflows to allow central office administrators authorize members, member profile changes, manage news content, manage publications, manage publication orders, communicate with members using broadcast email and generate necessary management reports.
Tecra has partnered with Diamond Bullet Corporation, an industry leader in web usability to redesign the information architecture to meet HFES goal to improve usability and accessibility of the website.
Technology MemberLogik™ is based upon advanced technologies such as Microsoft® ASP.NET, Microsoft .NET, and SQL Server 2000 as database backend. The software is built using highly distributed components that enhance scalability and reliability.
Result
The redesigned HFES website achieved main goal of web site usability and is in compliance with standards established by the U.S. Federal government's Section 508 and the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. The website allows authorized access to members and central office staff to manage member information, news, publications on 24 X 7 basis.
